Air Marshal ‘Timo’ Anderson, Director General, Military Aviation Authority
Biography:
Fighter Ground Attack pilot by background. Commenced flying career in 1983 operating the Tornado GR1. Successive tours on front-line squadrons, including with the Royal Australian Air Force flying the General Dynamics F111C, and operational deployments to the Middle East. As Officer Commanding No 14 Squadron, in early 1999 led the RAF’s Tornado GR1 squadrons committed to NATO’s Operation ALLIED FORCE in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia. Appointed Companion of the Distinguished Service Order in 1999 Operational Awards List.
In 2000, promoted Group Captain and granted command of RAF Brüggen in Germany, at the time home to the largest Tornado wing in NATO. At the end of this tour, planned and implemented the return of the Station’s squadrons and over 6000 personnel to the UK, the closure of the Royal Air Force’s last overseas Main Operating Base and the estate’s handover to the British Army.
Promoted Air Commodore and took post as MoD Director Equipment Capability (Deep Target Attack) in September 2003, sponsoring offensive air and land indirect fire capability requirements. Attended the UK’s Higher Command and Staff Course in early 2005, and in August that year assumed concurrent appointments of Commandant of the Royal Air Force Air Warfare Centre, Director of the UK’s Defence Electronic Warfare Centre and Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence at HQ RAF Strike Command. Areas of responsibility embraced operational test and evaluation of air systems; provision of EW operational support to the UK’s three Armed Services; and intelligence support, doctrine and tactics advice on UK air operations.
Promoted Air Vice-Marshal and appointed as the Assistant Chief of the Air Staff in March 2007. Member of the Air Force Board and Head of the Service’s Operations Support Branch, with primary responsibilities ranging across the development of the Royal Air Force’s strategy, acting as the Royal Air Force’s designated ‘User’ in the MoD’s Through Life Capability Management process and leading the Service’s engagement in the MoD’s annual financial planning rounds. Release to Service Authority for all Royal Air Force aircraft, Chairman of the MoD’s Military Aviation Regulation and Safety Board and National Security Non-executive Director on the Civil Aviation Authority Board. Appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath in the 2009 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
In April 2010, promoted Air Marshal and appointed first Director General of the newly formed independent UK Military Aviation Authority and Regulator of Military Air Safety. Responsibility for regulating and assuring Operating and Technical Air Safety, independent Air Accident Investigation and Convening Authority for Service Inquiries into Air Accidents. Recipient of the 2010 Curtis Sword, awarded biennially by the editorial board of Aviation Week and Space Technology for leadership and cooperation in transatlantic relations.
President of RAF Rugby Union, President of the Northern Ireland Wing of the Air Training Corps, President of the No 14 Squadron Association and Mentor to East of Scotland Universities Air Squadron.
Married with two adult daughters, outside of his family and professional interests he enjoys cycling, golf, rugby, motor racing, leisure flying and cooking.
